Dr. Narine Dat Sookram

Hello! I’m Dr. Narine Dat Sookram, an advanced generalist social worker/psychotherapist and research scientist, and I’m passionate about helping people navigate life’s challenges and build a more fulfilling life. From a micro-level, I work with clients who are experiencing anxiety, depression, and the stress of major life transitions, whether it be in the workplace, school, or otherwise. From a mezzo-level, I work with groups, organizations, and communities to address social issues. From a macro-level, I help by creating systemic change through activities such as policy advocacy, program development, and community organizing, such as incorporating my doctoral research project, which was based on Best Practices for Inclusive Hiring.vc

My record of being one of the most decorated individuals in Canadian history, with over two hundred awards and recognitions and over a dozen university degrees, including a social work honour from the Ontario Association of Social Work, is a testimony to me helping others strive.

My approach is client-centred and collaborative. I believe in creating a safe, supportive, and non-judgmental space where we can work together to find solutions that are unique to you. I draw from evidence-based practices, including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), to help you develop new skills and perspectives. I operate from a trauma-informed lens, and my doctoral thesis is related to diversity, equity, and inclusion, as I believe everyone deserves a fair chance in life.

I hold a Doctor of Social Work degree from Capella University, a Master of Social Work from Brescia University, a Bachelor of Social Work from the University of Manitoba, and an associate degree in Social Services from Mohawk College. Additionally, I hold a Bachelor of Professional Arts in Human Services from Athabasca University, a Bachelor of Education in Adult Education from Brock University, and a post-grad in Career Development from Conestoga College, just to name a few. I’ve also completed specialized training in Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) from Wilfrid University and level one and level two of Violence Threat Risk Assessment (VTRA), again, just to name a few.

Over the years, apart from my frontline roles as a mental health therapist and an employment counsellor, where I have helped clients with mental health, employment, and academic challenges, I have held leadership roles working in social services. For example, I have worked as a supervisor in addiction services at House of Friendship (HOF) in the Men’s Residential department. I have also worked as a manager for Argus Residence for Young People, the first point of contact for all shelters in the Region of Waterloo, in addition to a clinical manager role outside of the Region of Waterloo. All these experiences, along with my academic background, give me the skills to operate my private practice, where people come before profit.

Outside of my professional role, I enjoy writing, listening to music, and spending time with my family. I have recently published a book, titled Rising Above: My Path to Outstanding Achievements.

If you’re ready to begin your journey toward greatness, please feel free to contact me to schedule a free consultation, because remember, change starts with YOU.
